HEVI-LOAD:

Solving the Nation's Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Needs

What is HEVI-LOAD?

The Medium and Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle Infrastructure – Load Operations and Deployment  (HEVI-LOAD) Model is a ground-breaking decision-support tool to help planning agencies and electric utilities understand the charging infrastructure needs and charging load profiles of electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks, thereby minimizing investment risk and maximizing operational resilience.

Overview of the HEVI-LOAD Modeling Tool

HEVI-LOAD is a vehicle-grid integration planning tool that recommends the optimal number, type, and location of chargers needed for a cost-effective and reliable charging network that supports transportation electrification and decarbonization.

How HEVI-LOAD Works & Who Benefits

HEVI-LOAD imports and integrates data from travel demand models, adoption scenarios, and vehicle behavioral patterns extracted from telematics data and other sources, and analyzes the charging demand and load profiles at charging depots, freight corridors, and at the county, state, and national levels.

HEVI-LOAD leverages agent-based simulation technology to resolve integrated driving, parking, and charging activities with high spatiotemporal granularity. This enables the creation of electric charging infrastructure blueprints that account for both the duty cycles of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and the capacity of the electric grid.

HEVI-LOAD benefits federal, state & regional government agencies, electric utilities, consulting firms, universities, and other stakeholders:

  • Quantifies the type and location of charging infrastructure to meet demand
  • Identifies least-cost grid upgrades required for charger locations
  • Outputs charging load profiles at various geographic locations
  • Supports grid reliability through optimizing charging loads that minimize the cost of energy
